No matter what time of year you are travelling to Tanzania, you will have the possibility of experiencing the Big Five.
The Big Five is not, as one might think, an expression of size, but rather a term for the five animals which were hardest and most dangerous for the old big game hunters to bring down – i.e. lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo.
Nowadays, most of the animals are endangered and can not be killed, so the term is now primarily used on safari trips, as many visitors are very eager to experience the Big Five.
In addition to the Big Five, you will have the chance to experience many other animals in Tanzania's beautiful national parks. From giraffes, zebras, hippos, and crocodiles to monkeys, antelopes, hyenas, and an impressive range of birds.
Tanzania has it all! Including breath-taking landscapes that range from endless plains and savannahs to deep gorges and dense forest.
If travelling between November and June, you also have the opportunity to experience the Great Migration – one of the world’s greatest natural wonders.
Tanzania: Weather and climate
With its location close to the equator, you can expect day temperatures around 27°C all year round when going on a safari in Tanzania.
Tanzania has two rainy seasons – a short rainy season in November, and a slightly longer rainy season in April and May.
Mostly, however, the rain falls as heavy showers followed by sunshine, so you can easily go on a safari in Tanzania even during the rainy season.
The weather in Zanzibar
If you are planning on ending your Tanzania Safari with a relaxing beach holiday on the beautiful island of Zanzibar, you can also expect warm weather all year.
The rainy season in Zanzibar, however, usually brings more rain than on the mainland, so we don’t recommend going on a beach holiday on the island during the rainiest months.
Most of the year, though, Zanzibar is a fantastic beach holiday destination with comfortable temperatures, sunshine, and warm crystal-clear waters.
Beach holiday in wonderful Zanzibar
If you would like to end your Tanzania Safari with self-indulgence and relaxation, a beach holiday on the exotic island of Zanzibar is a great choice.
Zanzibar is a peaceful paradise surrounded by palm-clad, white sand beaches and crystal-clear, turquoise waters where you can truly unwind – far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
You also have the possibility of visiting Stone Town (UNESCO World Heritage), exploring the tropical forests, snorkelling, diving, or experiencing wild dolphins.
A safari in Tanzania is an amazing, but also very intense experience, so a little relaxation and time to digest all the impressions is recommendable.
- And being the epitome of paradise, Zanzibar is simply a must if you really want to pamper yourself.
Hotels in Tanzania
When going on a safari in Tanzania, you will usually stay at authentic lodges or luxurious tent camps with a great location and good service.
Living in a tent on the savannah is an amazing experience. Sounds and scents passing through the canvas ads an extra dimension to the safari and gives a unique feeling of being one with nature. To ensure a comfortable stay, the tents have plenty of amenities, including quality beds and en-suite bathroom.
Staying at one of our authentic lodges, you will have a solid roof over your head, modern amenities, and of course private shower and toilet. Also, the lodges often have a swimming pool where you can relax, read a book, or go for a swim between game drives.
